Meet Kirk: Overcoming Devastating Health Challenges to Return to His Life with Horses

“My heart, spirit, body and mind are so indebted to the Equestrian Aid Foundation. The support has been tremendous - in unimaginable and inconceivable ways.”

Kirk is a success story, but he had to overcome life-threatening illnesses to get there. Forced to close his hunter / jumper business in 2004 due to debilitating health problems including hepatitis C and liver failure, Kirk moved back home to be with his family. Then he saw a small ad for Equestrian Aid in a magazine "so I decided to apply." Surprised to be awarded a grant, he was soon receiving Equestrian Aid’s assistance to help pay for daily iving and medical expenses.

Initially, Kirk was so ill that he needed virtually complete care from his mother. He tried to make ends meet by working at a pet store whose owner was supportive of his situation. Unfortunately, he was only able to manage a few hours here and there.

The grant from Equestrian Aid helped Kirk get by. “So many times being able to purchase the things I thought I would have to ‘go without’ during the more difficult times made all of the difference. The Equestrian Aid Foundation made many days so much more enjoyable.”

Able to focus on his health, Kirk recovered enough to re-establish his horse show business and start a small breeding operation. He is back doing the things that he loves “Personally, I have been able to maintain a positive attitude and to work with people who share my love of horses. With the help of so many, and especially from the Equestrian Aid Foundation, I have been able to stay focused. I am so grateful."

Equestrian Aid is proud to have been part of Kirk’s recovery. We–and Kirk–are grateful for the generous donors that helped him get his life back.
