Fundraiser to feature film about legendary show jumping pair

Horsetalk.NZ - February 28, 2016

A special pre-release screening of the feature documentary Harry and Snowman this weekend in Wellington, Florida, is to benefit the Equestrian Aid Foundation.

Harry and Snowman tells the remarkable life story of international show jumper legend Harry deLeyer, a Dutch immigrant whose career was launched by his famous show jumping horse Snowman.

Snowman was a former Amish plow horse that Harry rescued off a truck that was bound for slaughter. He bought the big white horse for $80, and less than two years later, they rose to become the national show jumping champions and were the Cinderella story and media darlings of late 1950s and 1960s.

harry-snowmanOn Sunday, February 21, director Ron Davis, producer Karin Reid Offield and presenting sponsor Van Kampen Boyer Molinari Foundation will be at the advance screening, at 7.30pm at the Global Dressage Festival Stadium. General admission tickets start at $25, and VIP tickets start at $175.

Harry deLeyer will be present to accept the Luminary Award from the Equestrian Aid Foundation and there will be a Q&A with Ron Davis and the deLeyer family after the film.

Very few horse stories have been able to truly touch the hearts of a nation. Red Pollard and Seabiscuit did in the 1930s, Harry deLeyer and Snowman did it in the 1950s and then Ron Turcotte and Secretariat were the last to do it in the 1970s.

Harry & Snowman is the first time that the remarkable and heartfelt life story will be told by 85-year-old Harry deLeyer himself.
